In 1995-98 and again in 2000-01 Solvejg Jensen,
Chairperson of Education to Mapanza, was deployed to Mapanza by the Danish
Association for International Cooperation. She has since visited the area
multiple times and in 2008, she was assigned a plot of land by the late Chief
Mapanza. The idea was to create a center for activities on the land. In
January 2009 she started the first
sponsorates of children whose families cannot pay for an education. Ever since
we have had between 15-24 children i secondary school, sponsored by danes, who
want to make a difference for Zambian children.
In 2009 we began constructing a building in the
village of Kabeta in the Mapanza area. It was meant to house a pre school and
since 2016 the school has had between 50 to 100 chilidren between 3 to 6 years
of age who receive education 3 hours a day. As of January 2025 the school has
had a 1st grade and the intention is to
expand onto 2nd through 4th grade the coming years.
There are no administrative expenses connected
with a sponsorate. We collect money from sponsors and the money is sent uncut
to Zambia. Our contact person, Mr Geoffrey Makaya, makes sure that the money
gets to the children, so they can pay their schools. Every year in April and
December during term break, Mr Makaya collects receipts and letters from the children
and sends them to us. We then distribute the letters and receipts onto the
sponsors so they can follow the lives of the children they sponsor.
Most of
our sponsors choose to sponsor a child for the entirerity of secondary
school, but it is also possible to commit to a shorter time period. Some
children who begin secondary school with funds from their own family can due to
sickness or death in the family suddenly need a sponsor for only 1 or 2 years.
In 2017 we established the official NGO
”Education to Mapanza”. The board is made up of danes who have been working in
Africa as developement workers.
Since 2017 we have arranged for danish
volunteers to come to Kabeta and do voluntary work at Kabeta Pre School. During
2025 we’re sending no. 25 – 28. It’s an
amazing experience for both the volunteers and the school children. The
children experience grown ups with a different mindset than they are used to,
and the volunteers experience how the lives of Zambian children in rural Zambia
differ from their own.
After staying in Kabeta many volunteers choose
to study the natural life of the African bush or the magnificent nature around
Mosi Oa Tunya with possibilty of river rafting or bungy jumping, or maybe a
hike to the top of Kilimanjaro.
